Chapter Eight

“Let me give you the fifty-cent tour.” Having been encouraged to get to know the artist better, Marcus planned to take full advantage of the time the man’s lovers were giving him. He held his hand out, waiting patiently as Spencer chewed nervously on his bottom lip, staring at Marcus’s hand like it might reach out and smack him.

Marcus was not known for his patience, so he couldn’t figure out for the life of him why he was standing there waiting for Spencer to decide if he was going to take him up on his offer or not. It was very out of character for him, but for some reason he couldn’t fathom, he didn’t want to scare Spencer.

“Is it a big place?” Spencer asked as he glanced around. Marcus knew he was looking for his friends…lovers…whatever they were to Spencer.

“It’s adequate for my needs.” Marcus left out the part where it was adequate for his pack’s needs as well. Spencer didn’t seem to like strangers much. He’d probably lose his mind of he discovered just how many pack members actually lived on the vast estate. “Take my hand, Spencer.”

Spencer blinked up at him, almost as if he was unaware of what he was doing as he placed his hand in Marcus’s. The small shudder that rippled through his body when their skin touched did not go unnoticed. It seemed Spencer Dawson was not as unaffected by Marcus as he would like to pretend.

Good to know.

“Where are we going?” Spencer asked as Marcus led him through the massive house.

“I just want to show you around.” And he wanted to get Spencer someplace private so he could explore the feelings welling up inside of him for the strange little man. The more time he spent in Spencer’s company, the stronger they grew.

And that puzzled Marcus as nothing else had in years. Spencer was an anomaly. He didn’t fit into the mold Marcus was trying to put him into. He was a square peg for the round hole Marcus had first lumped him in. And that made him a mystery, one Marcus had every intention of solving.

“While it might not look it from the front, my estate is actually quite vast,” Marcus said as he escorted Spencer down the corridor leading to his office and private lounge. “The main estate is a mere one hundred acres but I also own the forest behind the mansion.”

“All of that?” Spencer paused next to one of the windows and looked out. “How far up do you own?”

“All of the way up the mountain.”

“Wow, that’s a lot.” Spencer’s face pressed against the glass as though he was trying to see right up to the top of the mountain.

“There’s a better view from the balcony upstairs,” Marcus said. “It’s at the back of the house. You can even see the lake in the back.”

Spencer’s head snapped around. “You have a lake?”

“I do.” Marcus chuckled at the eagerness on Spencer’s face. It looked like he had found the perfect carrot to dangle in front of the man.
